Welcome to the SSLA Millington Chapter Page!

Attention SSLA Millington Charter Members:

Great News!  We have a date selected for our next meeting, and it is an exciting one.  We will be having our Inaugural Speed mentoring Event on 22 September 2009, from 1100-1300 in conference room B-113 of the Whitten Building.  This will be a brown bag lunch, but if you wish to order box lunch from the Helmsman Club for delivery, we will collect orders/money   NLT Monday 21 September, and your lunch will be waiting for you.

What is Speed Mentoring?

If you have heard of speed dating, dozens of people looking for the right match, cycling through fixed three-minute conversations to quickly sort out prospective future romantic interests from potential romantic "duds"- you are on the right track.   Now think rather than meeting a potential future spouse, you are meeting future potential mentors and protégées, allies and sources of information to help you make the most of your career with the Navy.  During the national SSLA Symposium, the aviation break out group went through a couple rounds of speed mentoring, and it was a resounding success, so lets give it a try.

Who else is invited?

Since we are in the infancy of our local chapter, all are invited, and please pass the word to uniformed women of the sea services and those interested in becoming part of this affinity group.   Admiral Braun is the official host, and is inviting Flag Officers and Master Chiefs to participate as a mentor at the event.

How will it work?

A brief overview on how speed mentoring works will be given by CDR Connie Avery, organizer of local SSLA chapter.  After the brief, we will split into several groups and start the speed mentoring.  Each group will have a mentor, and several potential protégés.  The group will take a few minutes to introduce yourselves to each other.  (It is important to have an accurate count of attendees to assure a good mentor/mentee ratio).  Each group will have a deck of cards that contain professional questions/scenarios used to guide the group to discussions.  There is a time limit for each round, and then the mentors will move to another group.

RSVP:

If you would like to join us for this exciting event, please RSVP to CDR Connie Avery and LCDR Christine O'Connell.  Please indicate whether you will or will not attend, RSVP by Wednesday 16 Sept.

Volunteer:

Please let us know if you are interested in assisting in the following areas:

- Membership: (responsible for bringing SSLA sign ups, and building/maintaining local database)

President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary- at least to get us started.

Are you interested in running for one of these offices?

- Volunteer to coordinate the lunch orders.

Thanks, and look forward to seeing you there.
